Geneva Festivals

The Geneva Festival (or Fêtes de Genève) is held from the end of July to early August, and for visitors to the city in the summer this is an extravaganza of fun and entertainment.

Thousands of people flock to Geneva for the festivities, all keen to see such attractions as the boat races, the huge fireworks displays, the numerous fairground attractions and the lake parade. Over the 10 days that the festival takes place, there are over 100 concerts; so it’s no surprise that so many people from far and wide arrive in the city during this period to enjoy the fun.

International Flower Show

If peace and quiet are more your things head to Geneva during November for the International Flower Show (Floralies Internationales). Here you will find yourself surrounded by spectacular colours and aromas as international participants arrive to show the crowds their flower-arranging skills. It is held at the Palexpo Exhibition Centre, so do check it out if you are interested in seeing some spectacular flower arranging.

Coupe de Noël

This is not a festival that many people will want to take part in, but it is great fun to watch. If you happen to be organising your Geneva airport transfers around the middle of December then you might be lucky enough to spot some brave (or stupid) participants jumping into the freezing Lake Geneva. If you want to enjoy the spectacle then head to Jardin Anglais.

Europ’Art

For art lovers, the time to visit the city is at the beginning of May when the Europ’Art art festival takes place. This is held at the Palexpo Exhibition Centre, where you will be able to enjoy a whole range of different styles of art, from classical to more contemporary works.

Dolphin Tours

For those who like to have unique holiday, dolphin tours may be the answer. The listed places below can be visited for dolphin tours;

Southern California, USA - The coastal areas of Southern California offer some of the best dolphin and whale watching waters in the world. The warmth of the Pacific lends itself to grey whale migrations between December and April and provides perfect conditions for the ‘pods’ of wild dolphins (bottlenose, Risso’s, and Pacific white-sided dolphins, and as many as 5,000 in some) that are near the coast. Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safaris, in Orange County, offers year-round dolphin tours and boasts the world’s first ‘Eye-to-Eye Underwater Dolphin Viewing Pod’. This ‘pod’ is a government-approved vessel that pierces the water below the catamaran and is made of glass, for a feeling of truly swimming with the dolphins.

Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain - The south-west coast of Tenerife is a perfect place for dolphin and whale watching; there are more than 21 species of dolphins and whales in Tenerife’s waters, and it is known as the European destination for year-round spotting. Many operators work out of Tenerife and are glad to host private dolphin tours. Be sure to get the most out of your dolphin tours by either booking a place on a glass-bottomed catamaran, or by renting a private boat that will take you directly to the action. But if your boat doesn’t offer the intrigue of a glass-bottomed view to the cetaceans below, make sure it comes with a sea camera to bring you all the action below the surface.

Turks and Caicos Islands - If you find yourself in the post New Year slump and can’t wait until summer to head off on your dolphin tours, book a luxurious trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean. These two groups of tropical islands in the West Indies are a British Overseas Territory, and claim to be some of the best places for humpback whale watching during the winter/spring months from January to April. Be sure to reserve a glass-bottomed catamaran for your excursions, so you can see all the underwater action as you follow the migratory path of these North Atlantic humpback whales through the Salt Cay, a 75 square mile area of shallow coral reefs, and on to Silver Banks, their mating and nursery grounds. And, when you’ve had enough whale-spotting for one day, you can jump into the waters and snorkel or dive while listening to their melodic underwater songs.
